Ramadan Melodies
Muslims welcome Ramadan as a blessing from God. It is a time to self reflect and build on one's personal relationship with God through private worship, servings one's family, and giving back to the greater community. Just as Muslims are diverse, so too, are the ways they welcome Ramadan. Below you will find some songs/poems (or the more commonly known term in the Muslim world 'nasheed'), in many different languages. However, they all have one thing in common, showing gratitude for the blessed month of Ramadan or for the holiday at the end of Ramadan called Eid ul Fitr or (more commonly referred to as 'Eid'). Although Muslims speak many languages, the most revered language is Arabic, as this is the language of the Quran (the revelation given to Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him). You will find traces of Arabic in almost all of the nasheed below. Many Muslims avoid using musical instruments and resort to only using drums (percussion instruments) to sing nasheed as the Prophet Muhammad never listened to any instruments out side of drums. The nasheeds listed below use voice only or voice and drums.
